Defective Baby Strollers and Car Seats Pose Threat of Serious Injuries
Today’s busy moms and dads are on the go, and they often take their children along with them. Whether heading to the store or running errands, spending a day at the office or enjoying some weekend recreation, there seems to always be somewhere to go or something to do. Many modern parents pride themselves on taking their children everywhere with them, and there are a vast array of products available to parents to making toting their tots that much easier. Unfortunately, recent recalls of defective products, including infant car seats and strollers, raise some alarming questions about the safety of the products parents rely on for their little ones. By taking some extra precautions, parents can help ensure that the products they use with their children are indeed safe.
Recent Stroller and Car Seat Recalls
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the government agency charged with ensuring the reliability and safety of many of the products we rely upon each day. As part of that job, the CPSC reports defective product recalls, warning consumers regarding the dangers these products could pose. Products appear on the CPSC recall list on a sometimes daily basis, and recently listed items include baby car seats and strollers. In January 2016, the following Britax products were recalled due to safety concerns:
- Britax Infant Car Seats: Defects in the handle could pose a risk of injury to infants due to falls
- Britax Strollers: Foam padding in the stroller’s arm bar may come off in fragments and pose a choking hazard
Britax baby products are available in stores such as Babies-R-Us, Target and Walmart, as well as online retailers including Amazon and Diapers.com. Parents who have bought and registered the defective strollers will be notified by mail regarding repairs and replacement parts.

Ensuring Product Safety
While Britax is the latest baby stroller and car seat manufacturer affected by recalls, 2015 recalls have included products from manufacturers including UPPABaby, Stokke, and Graco. Many parents today choose to buy ‘gently used’ baby gear from places including Craigslist and stores specializing in second-hand children’s merchandise. While you may get a great deal on a high-end stroller, it is important to check the make and model of any stroller or car seat you purchase on the CPSC recall list to ensure it has not been recalled due to safety concerns. In addition, make sure to get the instructions and read through them carefully. According to the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports, even properly working children’s car seats and strollers can cause injuries when used improperly. Putting infants in jogging strollers, having inappropriately sized equipment, or failing to fasten all harnesses can all result in serious injuries to your child.
