Baby Gear & Toy Recalls Top Dangerous Products Lists
There is an abundance of different gear and gadgets on the market designed to entertain babies and give new parents some much-needed relief. Unfortunately, even the top brand-name children’s manufacturers sometimes overlook design errors and defects that could make these items dangerous for children. In terms of product liability, baby gear recalls and toy recalls top the list among all recent recalls. Most importantly, defects and errors have the potential to result in serious accidents and injuries.
Accidents and Injuries Among Young Children
While new parents typically worry about mishandling their infants or which way they lay them in a crib, the biggest danger likely comes from the products you are using to care for them. According to a March 2017 report by National Public Radio (NPR), injuries to small children and babies as the result of product defects are on the rise in the U.S. Over the last 10 to 15 years, baby injuries have risen by nearly 25 percent. Among the most common culprits in these injuries are baby nursery supplies, including strollers, high chairs, carriers, and cribs.
These injuries typically occur in the home, and often due to the child wiggling, squirming, or falling over the sides. Unfortunately, when young children fall, they tend to do so head first. As a result, head and neck injuries are common.
Parents are warned to never leave children unsupervised when strapped into a stroller or high chair, and to hold onto them at all times when using
a changing table. At the same time, manufacturers owe a duty of care to consumers in ensuring products are constructed with the proper safety harnesses and that packaging contains clear warnings as to the potential dangers. Failing to provide this can leave them legally liable for injuries that occur.

Recalled Baby Items
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) carefully monitors products made and sold for use by both children and adults in the U.S. Each year, they issue roughly 500 product recalls due to dangerous issues that have the potential to cause serious injuries. Among the latest recalls issued in fall of 2017, baby gear recalls and toy recalls dominated the top ten, many of which come from well-respected manufacturers. This includes:
- Plan Toys baby gyms, which can cause strangulation due to ropes on the sidebars
- Fisher-Price Infant Motion Seats, which have a motor that can overheat, resulting in burn injuries
- Kids Preferred Wind Up Musical Toys, which have a metal latch which can detach and cause a choking hazard
- Toys “R” Us Infant Wiggle Balls, which also have detachable parts that can result in choking
