I-95 Truck Accident Kills Goose Creek Family
What started off as a weekend trip to visit family in Pennsylvania ended in tragedy for a Goose Creek couple and their two young children. An I-95 truck accident killed all four family members on May 17, 2017 as they were headed home from their trip, just north of the South Carolina border. Sadly, rather than being an isolated incident, this truck accident is one of several that have occurred on the busy interstate over the last several months.
I-95 Truck Accidents Claim Lives from Connecticut to Florida
According to the Fayetteville Observer, the May 17 trucking accident on I-95 occurred just after 12:00 PM in Robeson County, when a semi-tractor trailer driven by a 68-year-old Myrtle Beach man failed to slow for traffic construction. His truck rear ended the Goose Creek couple’s pick-up truck, then continued to ram into several other vehicles. In addition to the couple and their two children, the truck driver was also killed, and six other people were seriously injured.
The accident is one of more than six truck accidents that have occurred on I-95 in April and May, cutting a swath from north to south and involving multiple states. Recent accidents include:
- A Stratford, Connecticut truck crash that occurred May 18, 2017
- A tractor trailer accident in Georgia May 15
- A rollover truck crash in Florida on May 10—one of three fatal truck accidents that occurred on I-95 in the Sunshine State in the last several weeks
In all, over ten people were killed in the above accidents, while more than a dozen others suffered serious and potentially life threatening injuries.

Common Causes of Truck Accidents
While not every truck accident that occurs is the fault of the truck driver, there are certain types of behaviors that can put truckers and other motorists on the road at risk. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, these include:
- Driving fatigued or falling asleep behind the wheel as the result of tight schedules
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or prescription medications
- Distracted driving, such as using cellphones and texting behind the wheel
- Speeding and driving too fast for conditions
- Aggressive driving, such as tailgating and failure to yield
- Running red lights and failing to obey traffic signals
In some cases, truck accidents can occur due to improper loading, which can cause cargo to become loose or weigh down one side of the truck. They can also occur due to mechanical issues, such as improperly inflated or damaged tires, faulty brake systems and engine problems.
