The legal profession contributes to their local community by performing pro bono work. The term Pro Bono means “for the people” and this legal term is used when work is done at no cost to the person benefiting. Firms do pro bono work for many groups in need of assistance such as battered spouses, immigrants and environmental groups, as just a few examples.
One example is the case of a Navy veteran, who received a $27,716 bill from the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA). The VA incorrectly claimed that he did not report his Social Security disability benefits when he filed his taxes, and had informed the IRS of the alleged debt for recoupment from the client’s tax refund. The military veteran received pro bono legal services and an attorney to help appeal the decision. The VA acknowledged the error and issued an award adjustment that removed the overpayment and provided him with $6,587 in back benefits. In addition, his benefits were accurately reinstated at $330 per month.

Lawyers helped with closings and other real-estate-related work for low-income families assisted by Habitat for Humanity and similar qualifying organizations, as well as providing corporate, real estate, and other legal representation and advice to the qualifying organization itself. Attorneys, as well as other legal staff also spent time actually building and renovating homes for the organization.
Legal representation is one of the greatest unmet needs confronting victims of intimate partner violence. Attorneys work with victims of domestic violence to obtain protective orders, peace orders, divorce decrees, custody of their children and child support at no cost.
